West Coast forward Wayne Dwyer toured Australia and Papua New Guinea with the Kiwis in 1982.

The Marist prop debuted for his province as a 20-year-old in 1979 and for South Island the following season, featuring in the famous 12-11 upset of Australia in 1980 and scoring a try in a loss to France in 1981.

Dwyer also played for South Island against New Zealand in a pre-tour fixture in 1982 before debuting for the Kiwis off the bench in a loss to Toowoomba. His only other appearances on tour were in the starting pack in a heavy defeat to Northern Division in NSW and in a big win over Highland Zone in Papua New Guinea, scoring two tries in the latter.

Remaining a representative stalwart in subsequent seasons, Dwyer played the last of 20 matches for South Island (including 10 tries) in 1986 and racked up 55 appearances for West Coast

Dwyer hung up the boots as the 39-year-old captain of Marist’s 1998 WCRL grand final victory over Waro-rakau, having scored 13 tries that season.
