Ponsonby United and Auckland half Artie Carlaw toured Australia three times with the New Zealand side during rugby league's pioneering period.

Part of the foundation Ponsonby United team in 1908 - the first club side formed in New Zealand - Carlaw also featured in Auckland Rugby League's first official match as captain of a City line-up against North Shore in 1909.

Carlaw also represented New Zealand in Australia in 1909, playing at five-eighth in the first Test and on the wing in the second. He also scored tries in wins over Newcastle and Queensland.

The Auckland regular next represented New Zealand on the 1912 tour of Australia, featuring in six of the seven games and captaining the team in the last four after tour skipper Arthur 'Boller' Francis took up a contract with Wigan midway through the trip.

Carlaw went to Australia with the New Zealand team again in 1913, making three appearances. He later served in World War I.
