Wheel Kiwis

The Wheel Kiwis represent New Zealand’s emerging presence in international wheelchair rugby league. Officially launched in 2024, the team made its historic debut in a landmark trans-Tasman Test Series against Australia’s Wheelaroos. These matches not only marked the Wheel Kiwis’ entry into the international arena but also highlighted their resilience and spirit.

In their debut series held in Auckland, the Wheel Kiwis faced formidable opponents, but their journey transcended the scoreboard. The team quickly captured hearts by showcasing determination and passion, with captain Jayson Hooker leading by example. Despite limited preparation, their inaugural try, scored by Jamie Tapp, symbolized a new era for wheelchair rugby league in New Zealand.

The series also fostered a strong camaraderie between the Wheel Kiwis and the Wheelaroos, with joint training sessions emphasizing skill development and mutual respect. These experiences provided invaluable insights, reinforcing the Wheel Kiwis’ commitment to growth and inspiring future players to join the sport.

With sights set on competing in the 2026 World Cup, the Wheel Kiwis are more than a team—they are pioneers shaping the future of wheelchair rugby league in New Zealand. Their journey reflects NZRL’s broader mission to promote inclusivity, resilience, and community through the sport.
