Former All Blacks forward Alphonsus Carroll became a dual international by touring overseas twice with the New Zealand rugby league team in the mid-1920s.
Born in the Southland town of Mataura, Carroll broke into the New Zealand rugby union side from Manawatu. He played eight matches for the All Blacks in 1920-21, including one Test match against NSW in the latter season.
Carroll switched codes with Wellington club Newtown in 1925 and played in the first interisland match that year, before turning out in nine games on New Zealand's tour of Australia.
The 31-year-old made 17 appearances on the troubled 1926-27 tour of Britain - including the series opener against England and the one-off Test against Wales - but he was one of the seven striking players amid disputes with team management.
All seven players were handed life bans by the NZRL upon their return, which were lifted in 1962. His bid for reinstatement to rugby union in 1930 was turned down by the NZRFU, but he was eventually reinstated in 1967. Phonse Carroll died in Palmerston North in 1974, aged 79.
