Auckland fullback Arthur Hardgrave toured Australia with the 1912 New Zealand team and played in the one-off Test against England in 1914. He was also one half of the first father-son Kiwis combination, with son Roy representing New Zealand in 1928.

A Taranaki rugby union player, Hardgrave switched to rugby league in 1908 and featured in Taranaki's early matches against Auckland. He moved to Auckland with the Manukau Rovers club in 1912 and quickly won selection in the New Zealand team, lining up at fullback in all seven matches (no Tests were played).

Hardgrave also played two matches for Auckland against the touring NSW team later that season.

After linking with Ōtāhuhu Rovers, he was at five-eighth for Auckland's fixture against the 1914 English tourists but reverted to fullback for New Zealand in the 16-13 Test defeat.

Hardgrave continued to play club football for another six seasons, joining Ponsonby United in 1917.
