Long-serving Otahuhu halfback Shane Dowsett toured Britain and France with New Zealand in 1971 and played his sole Test in Australia the following season.

Dowsett toured NSW with New Zealand Under-23s in 1969 and debuted for Auckland in 1970. His tour with the 1971 Kiwis was hampered by injury – playing just four matches, three of which were in France – as fellow Aucklander Ken Stirling cemented the No.7 Test jumper.

But after New Zealand’s 36-11 loss in the series opener on the 1972 tour of Australia, Dowsett flew over to replace an injured Stirling for the second Test in Brisbane, a 31-7 defeat.

A respected leader of Fox Memorial-winning Otahuhu sides during the 1970s, Dowsett was also an Auckland regular, including against Australia in 1975 and in the 1976 AMCO Cup.
