Otahuhu forward Peter Gurnick played seven Tests for New Zealand during the 1970s, encompassing two World Cup tournaments.
The tyro received his initial Kiwis call-up for the 1972 World Cup, debuting in the second-row in a 20-9 loss to France in Marseille, and shifting to lock for their other two games, defeats to Australia in Paris (9-5) and Great Britain in Pau (53-19).
He toured Australia with the 1973 Kiwi Colts team.
Gurnick was a reserve in the 1974 home series against Great Britain and – after featuring New Zealand Māori’s 19-16 loss and Auckland’s 11-2 win against the Lions – came off the bench to replace an injured Don Mann in the 20-0 third-Test loss at Carlaw Park.
Selected in the 1975 World Championship Series squad, he played in three matches during the European leg: at lock in the 12-all draw with France and 25-24 loss to Wales, and off the bench in the 27-12 defeat to England.
Gurnick later moved from Otahuhu to North Shore.
