Wellington back-rower Osmond ‘Ossie’ Butt played six games on the Kiwis’ 1956 tour of Australia.
Taranaki-born Butt played for the St George club in Wellington and was called up for New Zealand as a 22-year-old. He debuted late in the tour in a landslide win over Central Queensland in Rockhampton and made subsequent appearances against North Queensland, Wide Bay, Northern Division, Southern Division and Southern NSW.
Butt later represented Wellington against Great Britain in 1958 and had a stint in Canterbury. He became a prominent figure off the field post-playing, serving as coach of Wellington and as a Kiwis selector in the late-1970s and mid-1980s, as well as sitting on the NZRL board and having a stint as chairman of Wellington Rugby League.
