Queensland-born Horace Nunn toured his birthland in 1921 with the New Zealand team.
A rugby union halfback for Petone and Wellington, Nunn was contentiously left out of the All Blacks’ squad to tour Australia in 1914 due to having been certified unfit for military service.
He eventually enlisted in 1917 but deserted from camp at Trentham and was listed as a military defaulter before being arrested in Dunedin in 1920 and imprisoned. While attempting to avoid detection from military police, he and his brother reportedly played for Auckland club Marist in 1919 under aliases.
Nunn returned to Wellington in 1921 and earned selection in the New Zealand squad to tour Australia from the Petone club. He made appearances at five-eighth, halfback and wing, and scored a try in the tour-closing 27-14 win over Newcastle.
After captaining Wellington in 1922, Nunn took up coaching with the newly-established Hutt club – leading it to the WRL title in its foundation 1923 season – as well as taking charge of the provincial side.
