Long-serving Glenora halfback Eric Carson played three Tests for New Zealand in 1968 and ’70.

Carson debuted for Auckland in 1962 but had to wait another six years for his maiden Kiwis call-up, when he selected in the 1968 World Cup squad. He debuted in New Zealand’s 38-14 loss to Great Britain after replacing Canterbury’s Gary Clarke at halfback.

Graeme Cooksley was preferred for the 1969 series against Australia, but Carson was a tryscorer in Auckland’s 15-14 win over the tourists.

The 29-year-old came back into the Kiwis’ line-up for the second and third Tests against the dominant Lions in 1970, as well representing Auckland against NSW Country and Great Britain that season.

Moving to Wellington club St George in 1972, he was a player-coach for his new province – including representing Wellington against Wales in 1975.

Carson returned to Auckland in 1977 as player-coach of the Waitemata club.
