Mount Albert forward Des Herring represented New Zealand on the 1938 tour of Australia.

Making his senior club debut for Marist Old Boys in the 1932 Stormont Shield final at just 17 years of age, Herring transferred to Mount Albert two years later.

Herring broke into the Auckland team in 1935 – playing in the front-row against Australia opposite the legendary Ray Stehr – while his Kiwis call-up came in 1938 after representing North Island.

He played in New Zealand’s tour-opening loss to NSW (who also fielded Stehr) and featured in subsequent wins over North Coast, Toowoomba and NSW Group 4.

The following season, Herring and Stehr were opposing captains when Mount Albert defeated the touring Combined City team 16-11 at Carlaw Park. Mount Albert were also Fox Memorial champions that year.
