Hawke’s Bay’s Con McCarthy toured Australia with the New Zealand team in 1919.

From the Ahuriri club, McCarthy lined up at fullback in nine of New Zealand’s 11 matches across the Tasman and also featured in the match against an Auckland XIII after the side’s return.

McCarthy turned out for Hawke’s Bay at five-eighth in two matches against Australia later that year, kicking two goals in each of the 67-4 and 73-7 defeats.

The following season, he captained North Island from centre in a 46-5 loss to the visiting England team in Napier.
