The younger brother of NZRL Legend of League Maurie Robertson, Richmond five-eighth/centre Bruce Robertson was a prodigious talent who toured Britain and France twice with the Kiwis during the 1950s.

He debuted for Auckland at 17 in 1950, while he lined up at five-eighth for his province against France before becoming one of the youngest Kiwis ever when chosen to sail abroad. The squad was captained by Maurie, while Bruce played his first game for New Zealand against Halifax (18 years and 182 days) and scored three tries against St Helens.

Robertson was called into the Test team on the for the second clash with Great Britain (18 years and 231 days) and scored two tries in 20-19 loss at Station Road, with he and his Maurie earning lavish praise. The pair teamed up in the centres for the 15-3 Test win over Wales, but injury ruled Bruce out for the remainder of the tour. He finished with the impressive strike-rate of 13 tries in 14 games, however, having crossed for another hat-trick against Salford.

In the international wilderness in subsequent seasons, Robertson returned on the wing for both Tests against the touring Frenchmen in 1955 and scored New Zealand’s only try in its series-levelling 11-6 win in the second Test.

Robertson went away with the Kiwis again at the end of the year but was restricted to just nine appearances – scoring four tries – and again did not appear on the French leg. He played in the series opener against Great Britain, scoring a try in a 25-6 loss at Station Road that would be his last Test appearance.

He later coached Glenora, Richmond and Central Districts. Nephew Wayne Robertson was a Kiwi in 1974.
