North Shore five-eighth Steve McGregor was a bolter in the Kiwis’ squad to tour Australia in 1978, playing eight matches and scoring six tries.
McGregor’s selection was among the more remarkable given he was essentially playing third division football in Auckland, but he nevertheless grasped the opportunity.
The 21-year-old debuted in the fourth game of the tour – a loss to Illawarra – then scored tries in his next three appearances against Monaro, North Coast and Toowoomba. Though he was unable to shift John Smith from the Test No.6 jersey, McGregor continued to perform well in the minor matches, dotting down against Central Queensland in Rockhampton and crossing for a double in the Kiwis’ first-ever match on Papua New Guinea soil, a big win over Highlands at Goroka.
McGregor, his brief, bright representative career over as quickly as it started, later played for Ponsonby.
