Brian Campbell biography

Ellerslie five-eighth/centre Brian Campbell played two Tests for New Zealand on the 1959 tour of Australia, on which he scored eight tries in seven matches. In 1956, a 19-year-old Campbell was part of an Auckland side stripped of 17 Kiwis tourists that won the interdistrict competition on a gruelling South Island tour. His national call-up came three years later and the elusive utility-back scored tries in his first two games for the Kiwis against Northern Division from stand-off and Riverina from centre, before bagging a hat-trick against Southern Division to earn a place in the line-up for the first Test with centre George Turner ruled out.Campbell teamed up with Cyril Eastlake to oppose the champion Australian pairing of Reg Gasnier and Harry Wells, and scored a try in the second-Test defeat at Lang Park. But that would be his last appearance in the black-and-white jersey; injury ruled Campbell out of contention for the third Test and would hinder his availability for the 1960 home series against France and the 1961 tour to Britain and France.A valued clubman, Campbell later coached Ellerslie to Roope Rooster Knockout success in 1967.
