Marist and Auckland centre/stand-off Hec Brisbane was one of New Zealand's most prominent and durable players of the 1920s and '30s, playing 50 games for his country.
An Ellerslie United junior, Brisbane first played in the top grade for Marist Old Boys in 1923 and was still only 19 the following season when he represented Auckland against England, then played all three Test matches.
Brisbane played on the wing in the series-opening win, then scored tries in the second-Test victory and the dead-rubber loss after being moved to centre.
After making four appearances on the 1925 tour of Australia, Brisbane was a mainstay of the Kiwis' line-up on the troubled 1926-27 tour of Britain. Among 27 appearances, he scored three tries in a win over Bradford Northern, dotted down as a centre in the first Test against England at Wigan, and switched to five-eighth for the second Test against England and the one-off clash with Wales.
Brisbane was in the centres for two home Tests against England in 1928, scored eight tries in 11 games on the 1930 tour of Australia (no Tests were played) and enjoyed a memorable international swansong against England in 1932.
The 27-year-old played in the centres as New Zealand lost all three Tests, but he scored two tries in a spirited 20-18 defeat in the third encounter at Carlaw Park.
