Waikato fullback Vaun O’Callaghan toured Britain and France with the 1985 Kiwis as a teenager, making six appearances in the black-and-white jersey.

A handy goalkicker, the Huntly South tyro broke into the Waikato team for its successful 1985 campaign to become a bolter in the New Zealand touring squad. He debuted in the tour opener against heavyweight club Wigan, kicking two goals in a 14-8 defeat.

O’Callaghan also scored a try and four goals in a 32-12 thrashing of Widnes. Veterans and all-time great Kiwis James Leuluai and Gary Kemble were preferred at fullback for the five Tests.

He did not represent his country again but later moved to the Otahuhu club for the 1989-90 seasons, where his prolific pointscoring came to the fore, and turned out for the Auckland provincial side.
