Pioneering Hawke’s Bay forward Tom Cotterill toured Australia with the New Zealand side in 1911.

Cotterill represented Hawke’s Bay against Auckland in a historic 1910 encounter in Napier and turned out for Clive in the region’s fledgling club competition from the following season.

Making the trip across the Tasman in 1911, Cotterill’s only appearance was an injury replacement during New Zealand’s 24-13 win over Queensland at the Brisbane Cricket Ground; he came on for winger Ernie Asher.

The following year Cotterill was a try-scorer in the front-row as Hawke’s Bay went down 42-9 to the touring New South Wales side – which boasted the likes of Frank Burge, Paddy McCue and Billy Cann in its pack – and also featured for his province in matches against Wellington and Canterbury.
