Auckland back-rower/hooker Len Barchard toured Australia with the New Zealand side in 1930.

The City Rovers tyro broke into the Auckland provincial team in 1930 – just a year after cutting his teeth in the senior club ranks – and a strong trial performance earned him place on the trip across the Tasman.

Barchard played in New Zealand’s second match against NSW, a 29-2 loss at the Royal Agricultural Ground in Sydney, but that would be his only appearance thanks to an arm injury. He played against Auckland for the tourists upon their return home.

Barchard went on to have stints with Devonport United and Marist, eventually retiring in 1941.

His nephew, Des Barchard, played 10 Tests for New Zealand between 1947 and ’52.
