Waikato forward George Beadle played one match on the Kiwis’ 1939 tour of Great Britain that was called off after just two fixtures due to the outbreak of World War II.

England-born Beadle grew up in New Zealand and represented South Auckland, North Auckland, Wellington and Taranaki, as well as making the North Island side in 1939 from Huntly.

The 25-year-old featured at prop and scored a try in New Zealand’s 22-3 win over Dewsbury, after which the tour was cancelled.

Beadle was killed in a Huntly coal mine accident in 1944, aged just 30.
