Thames fullback Charles ‘Barney’ Winder played for New Zealand on the 1911 tour of Australia after switching from rugby union.

A long-serving Thames Valley rugby union rep who also played for Auckland in 1908-09, Winder changed codes in 1911 and won an immediate berth on the trip across the Tasman. He made just one appearance on the eight-match tour – at fullback in New Zealand’s 23-13 loss to Queensland in Brisbane – but featured in the match against Auckland upon the party’s return home.

Winder played for the newly formed Thames side in 1912 before hanging up the boots.

Winder was the first of four Thames-based players to represent the Kiwis – all of whom were called up between 1911 and 1913.
