ARTHUR MATTHEWS – KIWI #117

Test record: 0 Tests
Tours: 1919 tour of Australia

Versatile Auckland back Arthur Matthews toured Australia with the New Zealand team in 1919.

The North Shore Albions player earned selection for the trip across the Tasman after taking part in a trial match at Victoria Park.

No Tests were played on tour, but Matthews featured in three wins over country opposition: at centre against Tamworth, at fullback against Ipswich and at halfback against Rockhampton.

Matthews subsequently played for Rest of Auckland against many of his New Zealand teammates after the touring party’s return in another de facto trial, with a star-studded Australia arriving in August 1919 for a four-Test visit.
