Waikato forward Albert ‘Shirt’ Hambleton played both Tests on New Zealand’s 1948 tour of Australia.

A member of the Huntly club and a North Island rep, Hambleton scored two tries on Kiwis debut in a win over NSW Country in Wollongong to force his way into the team for the first Test, which New Zealand won 21-19 at the SCG.

The strapping 23-year-old played further games against Northern Division and Queensland, retaining his spot for the second-Test loss to Australia in Brisbane.

Hambleton later represented South Auckland against Australia in 1949 and 1953, and France in 1951.
