Nelson rugby league pioneer Dave Mason toured Australia with the New Zealand side of 1911.

From the St Mary’s club, Mason (also known by his Māori name, Rawiri Meihana) made his debut for New Zealand in a pre-tour match against Auckland and scored a try.

The robust forward played four matches in Australia, in a loss to a NSW line-up boasting some of the luminaries of the era, a win over Newcastle in which he bagged a try and two goals, and in two victories over Queensland, dotting down again in the first.

Mason was a regular for the Nelson representative side from 1911-13, including against the touring NSW team in 1913.
