New Zealand Rugby League mourns the passing of Kathleen Wharton (nee Keremete), Kiwi Fern number 92, who played 14 Tests for the Ferns between 2008 and 2013, and 2019.
A back-rower, Wharton made her debut for the incomparable Kiwi Ferns in the 2008 World Cup, where the Ferns went on to claim the title for a third consecutive time, beating Australia in the final 34-0.
She was then a mainstay in the team, playing every Test match before again being selected to play in the 2013 World Cup, where Wharton contributed a try to the 88-0 opening defeat of France. The Kiwi Ferns made the final once again, unfortunately their winning run broken by Australia.
After the World Cup, Wharton took a break to focus on her career and family. But after a 6-year hiatus, she made a remarkable comeback into league. She was included in the Māori All Stars team for their historic 2019 pre-season clash with the Indigenous All Stars, helped Papakura Sisters to an Auckland club grand final win, and was part of the triumphant Counties-Manukau side in the NZRL National Competition.
This success, on the back of her undeniable skill and athleticism, saw her called back into the Kiwi Ferns fold in 2019 at the age of 35.
Upon her return to the Test arena, Wharton made her mark with a try, 93 running metres and 19 tackles in a 46-8 win over Samoa. This display helped her get a Warriors contract for the second NRLW season, where she played all 3 matches.
In the 2020 season, Wharton again represented the Māori All Stars, and helped Counties-Manukau take out the maiden Sky Sports NZRL National Women’s Premiership title.
Not just a talented player, Wharton contributed greatly to her community and the growth of the game. After retirement, amongst other contributions, she co-chaired the Sport Northland Board, served on the Rugby League Northland Board, was Head Coach of the Māori All Stars, and co-coached the Hokianga Storm.
New Zealand Rugby League CEO Greg Peters says, “Hearing this news has shocked and saddened us deeply here at NZRL.
“Kath made such an immense contribution not only to the Kiwi Ferns jersey but to the community and the game of rugby league as a whole.
“Her passing will be felt by many, but we wish to pass our condolences to her whānau, friends, and of course the Northland community.”
