Our prestigious Pirtek Volunteer of the Month award returns for 2025, celebrating and recognising heroes from the grassroots rugby league community across Aotearoa, for their hard mahi dedicated to our game.
This award is given to volunteers who display the core values of NZRL’s Kiwi Way: being family first, innovative, inclusive, respectful, respectful, and humble.
We are proud to announce our first winner for 2025, the Pirtek Volunteer of the Month award for May goes to Darren Pullen from the Pātea Warriors Rugby League Club in Taranaki.
Since joining the Pātea Warriors, Darren has gone above and beyond his role as a coach. He’s become an inspiration for players, parents, and other volunteers like himself.
Darren focuses not just on physical rugby league skills, but also uses rugby league to build character, instil values, and create strong team spirit among his players. He creates an environment where every child feels valued and supported, no matter their skill level. His energy and positivity inspire young people to do their best, not just in sport, but in life.
He is also a strong advocate for inclusion, actively encouraging participation from all parts of the community. Thanks to all his efforts, more rangatahi from diverse backgrounds are getting involved in rugby league and feeling a real sense of belonging in the game.
Darren’s support doesn’t stop at the sideline. He also gives countless hours to organising events, fundraisers, and community gatherings, always working to bring people together, all while mentoring young players off the field.
He has built strong relationships with local schools and community organisations, to benefit more rangatahi by encouraging healthy, active lifestyles. Darren’s impact is felt beyond the Warriors, across the entire community.
Darren is more than just a coach, he’s a mentor, leader, and friend to all at the Pātea Warriors and their surrounding community. His commitment and impact make him a truly deserving winner for Pirtek Volunteer of the Month.
Pirtek CEO Chris Bourke shared, “Darren’s commitment to youth development, fostering inclusivity, and community spirit is a true reflection of ‘The Kiwi Way’.
“We are proud to acknowledge the incredible impact and positive difference Darren is making both on and off the field, Congratulations Darren on being named NZRL’s Pirtek Volunteer of the Month.”
