One of the first set of three brothers to represent New Zealand, Newton Rangers halfback Wilfred Brimble was the youngest of the trio – Ted played one Test in 1932 and Walter toured Australia alongside him in 1938.
He was born in Hilo, Hawaii to a Bantu mother and English father during the family’s two-year stay after leaving South Africa. The Brimbles moved to Auckland in 1915.
Wilfred began playing for Newton Rangers alongside Ted from 1935, while he was a non-playing reserve for New Zealand Māori against Australia in 1937, getting selected despite not being of Māori heritage.
Brimble made the trip to Australia with the New Zealand team the following year, playing in the tour opener – a 25-12 loss to NSW – and teaming up in the halves with Walter in five subsequent matches. Wilfred scored a try in a 37-18 win over NSW.
When international touring resumed after World War II, Brimble represented New Zealand Māori against the 1946 Great Britain side.
