Walter Milne became the second of only two players to play for New Zealand from Southland (after 1910 rep Ned Hughes) when he went on the 1911 tour of Australia.
The well-travelled Milne represented Southland, Wanganui and Taranaki at provincial level in rugby union, as well as earning North Island selection in 1909.
He switched codes in 1911 and went away to Australia with the New Zealand side, playing just one match – at hooker in a 23-13 loss to Queensland at The Gabba.
Milne stayed in Australia to play two first-grade games in 1911 with North Sydney. He went back to Taranaki, representing that province in rugby league from the Opunake club in 1913, and was part of Ponsonby’s ARL championship-winning team in 1919 before returning to rugby union.
