West Coast forward featured in all three Tests for New Zealand against the 1928 English tourists.

A Buller and South Island rugby union rep, Goodall switched codes after being sent off in a match. The Buller Rugby Union reportedly told him no action would be taken in he apologised, but he refused – instead playing rugby league for Granity.

The coalminer’s rise in the code was rapid, called into the New Zealand pack the following season to tangle with the tough British forwards in a tight series won 2-1 by the tourists.

Goodall faced off against England on two other occasions during that tour: in Buller’s 72-3 loss in Westport and as a tryscorer in New Zealand XIII’s 27-26 win in Dunedin.

Reinstated to rugby union when it was restored as the only code in Granity, Goodall later captained Seddon Shield Districts to a victory over the 1931 Wallabies tourists and represented Buller against Canterbury in 1932. He went on to coach Buller and serve as a selector for South Island in the 15-a-side game.
