Versatile back Ted Meyer holds a special niche in history as the first player to be selected for New Zealand from Northland.

The former Auckland rugby union rep switched codes in 1928 with the Hikurangi club and immediately gained a spot in the Northland team, before winning selection for North Island in 1929-30.

In the latter season, Meyer was chosen in the New Zealand squad to tour Australia. He scored two tries on debut against Western Division, played five-eighth in losses to NSW and Ipswich, and returned to the flank for a defeat to Metropolis (no Tests were played).

Meyer captained Northland against visiting Sydney club Easts – who boasted the likes of Dave Brown, Ray Stehr, Ernie Norman, Viv Thicknesse and Joe Pearce – in 1931.
