Ted Fitzgerald’s sole match for New Zealand came in 1924 against the touring England team.

A long-serving member of dominant Marist in the Christchurch rugby union competition, the Ashburton product followed the club to rugby league in 1924.

Fitzgerald captained Canterbury against England from the centres before getting a call-up on the wing for the third Test in Dunedin, which New Zealand lost 31-18.

He represented Canterbury against the famed 1925 Queensland team in Christchurch, where he and James Saunders paired up in the centres against the legendary duo of Tom Gorman and Jimmy Craig.
