Auckland halfback Robert Grotte toured Australia with the 1938 Kiwis after making a mark with Sydney club St George.
Grotte played 12 of the mid-table Saints’ 16 top-grade matches in 1935 and made one further appearance in the opening round of 1937.
Returning to Auckland and Marist in 1938, Grotte gained a spot in the New Zealand side to go across the Tasman. He made a tryscoring debut against North Coast in Lismore and played further games for the tourists against Toowoomba and Queensland, opposing former Australian Test halfback Fred Gilbert in both matches.
Grotte played for Marist again in 1939 and later turned out for City and Ponsonby during the first half of the 1940s.
