Richmond second-rower Ray Lawless played Tests for New Zealand against England and Australia on home soil during the 1930s, as well as representing Auckland against both touring nations.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a rapid rise in 1932, parlaying some excellent club form into an Auckland debut against England. A week later he came into the New Zealand side for the 25-14 loss in the second Test and retained a spot for the 20-18 dead-rubber defeat.

Lawless also turned out for the NZ Presidents XIII against England in Wellington.

New Zealand subsequently endured a three-year international hiatus, but Lawless was recalled for the deciding third Test against Australia at Carlaw Park at the expense of Bill Glynn, which the home side lost 31-8. He played in the tour-closing match for Auckland Province four days later.
