Glenora and Auckland centre/winger Mike Patton played six Tests for New Zealand off the bench in 1990-91.

Patton represented Junior Kiwis in Australia in 1985 from Mangere East, spent 1986 with Manukau and joined Glenora in 1987. That season he broke into the Auckland team, going on the province’s tour of Great Britain.

He played in Auckland’s wins over Great Britain in 1988 and ’90 – scoring a try in the latter – and dotted down in its 26-24 upset of Australia in 1989.

After also representing Kiwi Colts against Great Britain in 1990, Patton debuted for New Zealand in the second Test against Papua New Guinea, an 18-10 win in Port Moresby.

Patton came off the bench in all five of the Kiwis’ 1991 Tests – the two big wins at home against France and the three matches in Australia, including the stunning upset victory in Melbourne.

Representing Auckland one more time against Great Britain in 1992 (a 14-8 loss), Patton hung up the boots at the end of the subsequent season he played with French Championship runners-up Pia.
