LEO BROWN – KIWI #444

Born: 31 October, 1944
Died: 17 July, 1989
Test record: 0 Tests
Tours: 1965 tour of Australia

A Kiwis tourist to Britain and France in 1965 from West Coast, Leo Brown later moved to Christchurch and represented Canterbury.

The 20-year-old centre/winger’s New Zealand call-up came despite an injury- and illness-impacted season that had restricted him to just a few club games. He dotted down in his first two games for the Kiwis – in wins over Warrington and Halifax – and finished the tour with three tries in nine games but did not feature in any Tests.

Brown continued representing West Coast until 1967, partnering Greymouth Marist clubmate and future New Zealand and Canterbury stalwart Mocky Brereton in the backline, before heading across the Southern Alps in 1968 to join Marist-Western Suburbs and feature in Canterbury’s Rugby League Cup success.

A talented all-round sportsman, Brown won the Canterbury decathlon title and finished second in the 1968 national titles.
