Te Atatu’s goalkicking fullback John Wilson played two matches for New Zealand during the 1972 World Cup.

The Auckland rep was chosen in the Kiwis’ World Cup squad despite missing the tour to Australia earlier that year, while he came into team at fullback after wayward goalkicking had proved costly in the tournament-opening loss to France.

Wilson converted New Zealand’s only try in the 9-5 loss to Australia in Paris, while he slotted two goals in the Kiwis’ 53-19 defeat to Great Britain in Pau.

Later joining Northcote and topping the ARL pointscoring charts, Wilson represented New Zealand Māori from 1975-78.
