Former Waikato forward Jim Laird made four Test appearances for New Zealand during the 1930s from Auckland club Marist.
Originally playing for Ngāruawāhia, Laird moved north and was called into the New Zealand side to replace injured second-rower Lou Hutt for the third Test against England in 1932. The home side restored some pride at Carlaw despite the series whitewash, going down 20-18.
In New Zealand’s next international assignment – the 1935 home series against Australia – Laird featured in the second-row in all three Tests, teaming up with Lou Hutt in two matches and Reg Ward in one in a 2-1 defeat.
Laird also represented Auckland in a 16-8 loss to the 1935 Australian tourists.
