A member of New Zealand’s squad that toured Australia in 1913, Jim Auld was part of some of the most historic matches in Canterbury Rugby League’s early years.
The front-rower featured in the Canterbury provincial team’s trailblazing fixtures against Wellington, New South Wales – in which he opposed the likes of legendary pioneering forwards Frank Burge and Billy Cann – and Hawke’s Bay in 1912.
Auld was one of three Cantabrians selected for New Zealand’s trip across the Tasman the following season, alongside Billy Mitchell and Abbie Shadbolt, and featured in three of the four marquee matches against NSW. He was released to his province upon the team’s return to play for Canterbury in a 32-5 loss to New Zealand.
After captaining Sydenham to victory in the inaugural CRL premiership later that year, Auld again squared off against a star-studded NSW team in Christchurch for a well-beaten Canterbury line-up.
