Auckland winger Gordon Midgley toured Australia with the New Zealand side in 1938.
The Ellerslie junior transferred to play for the Ponsonby United reserve grade team in 1934 before a brief return to rugby union. But the prominent sprinter rejoined rugby league’s ranks with Marist Old Boys in 1937 broke into the Auckland side.
Selected for New Zealand the following season, Midgley played four matches on a tour of Australia where no Tests were scheduled. He scored a try in the tour-closing 19-all draw with a strong Sydney representative team.
Midgley returned home to help Marist to Fox Memorial Championship success, but he would only played two more seasons of club football.
