Dual international forward Dave Evans toured Australia with the All Blacks in 1910 and with the New Zealand rugby league team in 1912.

A long-serving Hawke’s Bay rugby union forward, Evans played four matches for the All Blacks on their 1910 tour – including two matches against Queensland and a Test against Australia at the SCG.

Evans was exposed to rugby league during that tour, however, and was instrumental to three Hawke’s Bay clubs switching to the 13-a-side code in 1911. He played for City and Hawke’s Bay during the fledgling region’s first two seasons, earning a place in the New Zealand squad to go across the Tasman in 1912.

The 25-year-old played five matches on tour, featuring in wins over NSW, Queensland and Newcastle, as well as losses to a strong ‘Kangaroos’ combination and in a late-tour clash with NSW.

Evans would play twice more against NSW, for Hawke’s Bay against touring teams in 1912 and 1913.
