Northland product Danny Campbell played one tour match for the 1980 Kiwis in Britain early on in his long and decorated stay with Wigan.
The front-rower cut his teeth with Far North Falcons and represented Northland before linking with Wigan in 1979.
Campbell turned out for New Zealand XIII in a 51-7 loss to Australia in Christchurch in 1980 and played his sole match for the Kiwis in a win over Leigh later that year after returning to the Manchester club.
As well as featuring in further matches against international touring teams – for Northern Districts against France in 1981 and Wigan against the all-conquering 1982 Kangaroos – Campbell won a John Player Trophy final with the cherry-and-whites in 1983 and came off the bench in the famous 1985 Challenge Cup victory over Hull FC at Wembley.
Campbell followed up his 145-game stay at Wigan with stints for Leigh and Runcorn Highfield. He passed away at Mitimiti in the Far North in 2021, aged 65.
