Ponsonby three-quarter Brian Riley played two Tests against Australia during the second half of the 1930s.

Riley debuted for Auckland as a teenager in 1934 and broke into the New Zealand side the following season, coming into the centres for the third Test and scoring both of his team’s tries in a 31-8 loss to an Australian side led by brilliant centre Dave Brown. He lined up against Australia at five-eighth for Auckland four days later.

After playing for Taranaki against the English tourists in 1936, Riley was chosen as a centre for New Zealand’s Carlaw Park series opener against Australia in 1937. He was replaced by Arthur Kay after a 12-8 loss.

Riley made himself unavailable from the doomed 1939 Kiwis tour of Britain but later played in the NZ Army rugby union team during World War II. He played rugby union for Omaha in the Rodney sub-union well into his 30s.
