Otahuhu forward Leonard ‘Bill’ Hattaway played three games on the Kiwis’ 1959 tour of Australia.
Hattaway had played for Otahuhu in the inaugural Fox Memorial grand final, won by Ponsonby, in 1958 before coming through the successful New Zealand coaching school in Palmerston North the following season and snaring a place in the Kiwis’ squad.
The 28-year-old scored a try on debut in New Zealand’s win over Northern Division in Gunnedah and made subsequent appearances in victories against Toowoomba and Central Queensland.
Hattaway was part of the New Zealand Māori team that lost to France in 1960 before taking up a player-coach position with Wingham on NSW’s Mid North Coast.
