Manukau forward Angus Gault played two Tests for New Zealand in 1937 and toured Australia the following season.
Scottish-born, he emigrated to New Zealand as a 16-year-old and played senior rugby union in the King Country region before switching to rugby league in 1936 with the Manukau club. He represented Auckland against England that season.
Gault trialled strongly in 1937 to win New Zealand selection for the Test series against Australia. He and Joe Cootes propped against the vaunted combination of Ray Stehr and Jim Gibbs in the 12-8 loss and 16-15 win, both at Carlaw Park.
The mobile forward earned a spot on New Zealand’s tour of Australia in 1938, but after playing in the opening match against NSW and against North Coast, a serious hip injury sidelined him for the rest of the trip.
Gault played one more season for Manukau in 1939, before serving in World War II.
