A rugby league pioneer in the north of England, Alf Chorley played just one match for New Zealand but still holds the distinction of being the oldest player in Kiwis history.
Chorley played for Halifax in the inaugural breakaway Northern Rugby Football Union season in 1895 (after starting out as a rugby union player for the club) and played over 100 games for Swinton from 1899-04, winning a Challenge Cup final.
Inspired to move to New Zealand by the All Golds’ trailblazing 1907-08 tour of Britain, Chorley lined up at fullback as Auckland recorded its maiden win over Taranaki in 1908.
The Ponsonby regular played in Auckland’s 52-9 loss to England in 1910 and was chosen at fullback for the one-off Test at the Domain Cricket Ground a week later, with New Zealand going down 52-20. Chorley was 36 years old.
