A member of the pioneering New Zealand Māori tours of 1908 and ’09, front-rower Alex Stanaway (also known as Ariki Haira) visited Australia a third time with the New Zealand team in 1911.
He was part of the trailblazing 1908 Māori tour alongside brother Jack (Hone Haira) and featured in three wins against NSW and one against Australia during the 1909 tour.
Stanaway helped establish the City Rovers club and played against the Northern Union tourists twice in 1910, for New Zealand Māori and Auckland. Alex was a New Zealand selector for the one-off Test against the Englishman, a match Jack refereed.
Chosen in the New Zealand squad in 1911, Stanaway played six matches in Australia (no Tests were played), scoring a try in a 21-20 win over Newcastle. He played for Auckland against New Zealand in 1912.
Stanaway later accumulated a distinguished and eventful service record with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and the 1st and 2nd Auckland Regiments during World War I.
