The National Youth Tournament is nearly back for another year, and heading to the South Island for the first time ever.
This year 36 rangatahi teams will converge at Christchurch’s world-class Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub. The Boys Tournament kicksoff first, running from Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 September.
The Girls Tournament will commence on Wednesday 24 September, coinciding with the boys’ finals day, and running through to Friday 26 September.
In 2024 the Boys 16s was won by the Akarana Falcons, while the Auckland Vulcans claimed the 18s title. Over in the Girls Tournament, the Counties Manukau Stingrays dominated and won the 16s grade, and the Wellington Orcas wāhine triumphed in the 18s.
This year, twelve regions from across Aotearoa will come together to compete, with the country’s up-and-coming young players set to showcase their skills on the national stage.
Traditionally held in Rotorua, the National Youth Tournament has been running in its current form since 2010. The move to the South Island was spurred by the strong growth of rugby league in the region in recent years.
Canterbury Rugby League and NZRL are excited to host the tournament in the South Island, “This is a very exciting time for Canterbury Rugby League,” says Canterbury Rugby League CEO Malcolm Humm.
“It is a real honour for us to host the 2025 National Youth Tournament and we thank NZRL for this opportunity.
“We believe with the exceptional facilities we have at Ngā Puna Wai and the progress the city has made with the rebuild, this will contribute to an enjoyable experience for those visiting from other parts of the country.”
The tournament is shaping up to be an exciting week of rugby league, rangatahi, and regional pride, highlighting the depth of our emerging players across Aotearoa.
