Our Pirtek Volunteer of the Month award celebrates and recognises heroes from the grassroots rugby league community across Aotearoa, for their hard mahi dedicated to our game.

This award is given to volunteers who display the core values of NZRL’s Kiwi Way: being family first, innovative, inclusive, respectful, respectful, and humble.

We are proud to announce our second winner for 2025, the Pirtek Volunteer of the Month award for June goes to Peter McInally from the Howick Hornets in Auckland.

Peter is a pillar for the Howick Hornets and their wider community, known and appreciated by all.

He is a giving and selfless major sponsor of the club, including sponsoring junior rugby league uniforms, and even completing electrical security work for the club, often out of his own pocket.

On top of sponsorship and despite running his own business which he works long hours for, Peter still makes time to give back to the club. He wears many hats and is always keen to take on new roles and tasks without hesitation.

Peter is down at the fields bright and early every Saturday morning, setting up fields, opening up the clubroom, and preparing food, as he is also the Hornets’ resident chef when hosting visiting teams.

He even finds time to play for the Masters team!

Clubs like the Howick Hornets can only continue to thrive with amazing volunteers like Peter, with a club representative sharing, “our club would be nothing without the effort he puts in each and every week”.

“Rugby league is built on volunteers like Peter, and we are proud to celebrate his incredible contribution.”
