New Zealand Rugby League is deeply saddened by the passing of former Kiwi #432, Graham Mattson.

A versatile forward who could also play at stand-off, Auckland’s Graham Mattson played two Tests for New Zealand and toured Britain and France with the 1965 Kiwis.

After retiring from playing, Mattson turned his talents to coaching in the 1970s with Point Chevalier before coaching Mangere East, spending most of his time with the lower grades. In 1981 Mattson was Head Coach of the new Papatoetoe Panthers club, also being part of their inaugural committee. In 1990 he was appointed the Auckland Head Coach, and later earned international appointment coaching Tonga at the 1994 Pacific Cup during his tenure as the island nation’s development officer.

Mattson was also known for his work with and for youth in the South Auckland community as a well-respected Police Officer.

New Zealand Rugby League extends its heartfelt condolences to Graham’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of playing with and being coached by him. His contributions to the community, and the game of rugby league as a player and coach will long be remembered.
