Waikato prop Wiremu Hira ‘Rick’ Muru earned his Kiwis call-up as a 30-year-old, touring Britain and France with the 1980 Kiwis.

The Taniwharau stalwart played for North Island against England in 1975 and in the New Zealand Māori sides that won the first two Pacific Cups in 1975 and ’77, as well as representing North Island Māori in 1977 and New Zealand Māori in 1979 against Great Britain.

A veritable giant in the front-row, Muru also turned out for New Zealand Māori in its 10-all draw with Australia in 1980, before making the Kiwis squad at the end of the year.

Muru scored a try on debut for New Zealand in the tour opener against Blackpool Borough, and made subsequent appearances against Cumbria, Leeds, Warrington and Leigh.

He featured in another international match for New Zealand Māori in 1981, a loss to France in Huntly.
